2014 Old Block Shiraz Image

2014 Old Block Shiraz

Vintage 2014 was a season of varied natural weather events culminating in some beneficial rain in mid February. The harvest began about a week earlier than average on February 4th and ripening threatened to be highly compressed before the rain event. These old vineyards weathered this changing season in typical nonchalant fashion to produce lower than average yields with exceptional aromatics and the classic layered flavour spectrum we expect from heritage Shiraz vines.

To qualify for Old Block, vineyards must be planted on their own rootstock and be older than 40 years old. The youngest vineyard used in the 2014 Old Block Shiraz was planted in 1963 ; whilst the oldest planting was 1870. Once the vineyard has qualified to be considered Old Block; it is graded in a blind tasting by the winemaking team to determine if it meets the quality standard. The parcels from Eden and Barossa Valley are then carefully blended by Senior Winemaker Toby Barlow to create a balanced and age worthy wine.

Vintage 2014 in Barossa old vine Shiraz produced subtle and elegant wines; particularly in contrast to the boisterous 2013 Vintage. The 2014 Old Block Shiraz has all the hallmarks we expect from this wine: full bodied textural mouthfeel, immaculate oak and fruit flavour integration and a supple persistent finish. The acid and tannin balance that underpins the wine will stand it in good stead to cellar for quite some time.

If stored correctly this wine will age gracefully over the next 30 years.
