2016 Touriga Nacional Image

2016 Touriga Nacional

A short winter and warm dry spring got the growing season off to an early start. Well timed rains in November & January ensured vines had enough moisture to support ripening through to harvest. The early start and healthy ripening conditions after the rain brought on vintage through an ideally mild February and March with many cool nights. The 2016 vintage delivered the ideal vineyard outcomes of excellent yields and quality, and the wines have the potential to become part of the Barossa’s elite and fabled vintages.

The Touriga vineyard is located on the St Hallett property and is viewable from Cellar Door. This vineyard was planted in 1978 and is considered one of the oldest and leading Barossa Touriga plantings. It is also a source block for propagation of Touriga vines that others wish to plant.

The key to this wine is retaining the aromatic lift and intensity of the variety whilst balancing the perceived sweetness and lush texture on the palate with a tannin structure that complements and extends the flavour persistence.

The Touriga grapes are picked early at 13 Baume to retain flavour freshness and then de-stemmed in small fermenters. Cool fermentation at 24 deg C and extended skin contact for 21 days build the palate. Post fermentation the wine is matured in French Oak for 9 months before being blended and bottled.

The palate is inky and lush with fresh Turkish delight and summer pudding flavours framed by velvety, mouth coating, tannins.
